I would agree with most of the positive comments others have made about this item. For me, it is certainly much better than windshield mounting as I was never able to find a spot that was close enough to use comfortably but still allow safe outward vision (two-seater convertible, small windshield). This thing solved that problem for me.
That said, with sharp turns and the occasional pothole, it will move around on my dash a little bit - my dash has a pebbled finish and very little in the way of flatness. I am certain this beanbag would become a projectile during a crash, at least in my vehicle. I'm keeping it nonetheless.

This is the only sensible way to use your GPS in your car! I was skeptical but I bought it here on Amazon.com sold by Beach Camera. The price was right, and free shipping and no sales tax, other places like the major retail electronics outlets are pricing this item between $24.99-$39.99. The frustration free packaging is great!! Just take the item out of the box, take the poly bag off and you're set. I have a new car and might trade it in the future so I don't want any glue residue left on dash, also the suction cup mount for the windsheild leaves a ring on the windsheild that just invites theives to break in to the car. Used this item last weekend on a road trip of various road types, this thing stays put and at just below eye level the Garmin Portable Friction Mount has got it all over the other types of GPS mounts!!! Buy it...you will be glad you did!!!

Add me to the list of satisfied customers for this product. I've used the cup to my nuvi, but was shelved in favor of the friction device. I often move my Nuvi between cars, making it a very easy process. There are enough grip on the mountain to prevent sliding and sufficient for adequate finger pressure on the touch screen to make selections without disrupting the GPS position. You can rotate the shaft 360 degrees, and even remove the stem to facilitate packaging, if you're a traveler like me who use the nüvi into different rental cars.

This is a wonderful option/improvement to the windshield mounted device that comes with the GPS unit. Just remember - you have to have the tray that came with your GPS to make the friction mount work.

It does it job quite well. Very pleased with it. The second one I have gotten as the first was stolen out of the car with the GPS.
